Suma - Ashes album cover

"Ashes" is a limited edition re-release with updated artwork from Swedish doom/sludge metal band, SUMA. It is limited to 300 copies and available through Argonauta Records. SUMA characterizes its music as "noise" and they hit the nail on the head with that description. "Ashes" is full of heavy, grooving undertones with an over abundance of sampled "noises", for lack of a better term. A fusion of sludge metal with more than just a touch of mid 90's industrial influence, this album lacks any real finesse and drags on. While the album contains only 5 songs, it clocks in at just over an hour in length. The album would be much improved if the songs were limited in length to 3 to 5 minutes instead of dragging on for 10 minutes or more. "Ashes" is overly repetitive in nature and fails to draw the listener in and focus their attention. Given a few revisions, this group has potential, but as it sits right now, in my humble opinion, "Ashes" will not be the album that propels SUMA to the top of their game.<
