First of all, I never heard about this band until I received this album to review earlier this month. To be perfectly honest, I am not up to date with a lot of what is going on musically in Poland other than the bands we all know like VADER and DECAPITATED. Let's just say that this was a lot of fun to review and I will continue to listen to this album for the next coming months. This was as refreshing an album I heard in a very long time.
In summary, Chemia were founded in 2007 but started doing shows throughout their homeland of Poland in 2010. ''Let Me'' is their second release in their short career.
Beginning with the first guitar riffs and heavy drumming, I can hear that the production of this album is top notch and I haven't heard this good of a production in a number of years. The instruments don't trump the sound of the voice of the singer. We can hear every instrument and every note throughout this album.
Before looking up for more information on this band (which wasn't easy at all actually), I really thought this was an American or a Canadian band. The voice of the singer did not have an accent so it was not a dead giveaway. The singer has an awesome voice; it has emotion, power and does carry some impressive range on some songs. I can compare his voice to a number of vocalists in the 90's and early 2000's like Eddie Vedder (from PEARL JAM), Matt Walst (from Canada's own THREE DAYS GRACE) and Brett Erickson (from now defunct BREAKING POINT). It has a Jim Morrison kind of growl and gruffness about it which I highly enjoyed.
The overall sound does remind me of a lot of the Nu-Metal bands in the early 2000s and this release would have not been out of place in that time period. Though I digress, the style of music does lean towards more Hard Rock than anything else. They have heavier songs than others but I would not say that they are a Metal band.
The songs are very catchy and could be played on a lot of Commercial Radio Rock Stations like CHOM FM here in Montreal or THE EDGE in Toronto. If they could get more attention, I think they could have a decent success in Canada because they fit in the mold of a lot of the newer Canadian Rock Bands like ST. ASONIA or more established bands like BILLY TALENT or THREE DAYS GRACE.
''Fun Gun'', ''Gotta Love Me'' and ''I Love You So Much'' are some of the more uplifting songs and have a party atmosphere. They might be the three most commercial songs on this album but they get your blood pumping and you just want to tap your feet to the music.
''The Luck'' makes me think about the John Bush Era ANTHRAX Albums. Well this song actually reminds me of ''Cadillac Rock Box'' from ''We've Come For You All''. ANTHRAX is my favorite band and I love every album they have done but this song was more Rock than Metal from the Thrash Metal Pioneers. ''The Luck'' has that same feeling, that same emotion I feel when I listen to that particular ANTHRAX song.
''The Shadow'' actually begins like a GREEN DAY song which I felt what out of place on this album. A lot of people (including yours truly) abandoned that band after the first two of three albums because it became really commercial and well a lot of us felt angst for a number of years. I got sidetracked for a minute and I am truly sorry. ''The Shadow'' sounds like something from American Idiot or one of the newer albums. This is the weak link in a very good album persay.
This album could have been a great hit in the early 2000's with the Nu-Metal and Hard Rock revival we all loved for a short period of time. Like I said beforehand, the Production is awesome and they sound like a ton of bricks (French Canadian Expression). The singer has some great pipes and if you love PEARL JAM and some of the early Grunge Bands (including FAITH NO MORE), you'll love this album!
