Listening to DOWN RIGHT DIRTY's album "Drunk And On Drugs" was an experience for sure; this album is dirty and unloved and I'm sure it's intentional. It lives true to the genres DOWN RIGHT DIRTY identify with, being the trashiest hardcore I've ventured near due to a love of slick production - you won't find that here; this album is a raw and beastly thing.
The album title "Drunk And On Drugs" gives you a subtle hint about the content of the lyrics and the message of the album. If you were still unsure, songs named "Pissed Off And Broke" and "Beer In The Freezer" might clarify things further. Gang vocals and angry spitting lead vocals are what these songs are all about, and with only two tracks exceeding 3 minutes, it's no huge time commitment to give it a listen.
"Drunk And On Drugs" is no snake in the grass, you'll damn well see this snake within four seconds of the first song. You'll know exactly what you are in for, and if you are a fan of the manic drums and perfectly imperfect vocals that punk entails, you'll likely enjoy the ride.
"Maxwell Murder" is a standout for me, as this track deviates away from thrash and towards a (very) slightly more melodic punk style. I'll be honest, I didn't enjoy this album fully, but that is because I don't enjoy the genre. I'll recognise that, put it out there for full transparency, and finish it off with acknowledgement that these musicians have created an album that will probably please fans.
What I DO know and appreciate about this album in relation to the style, is that it's a wonderfully vocally angry and bitter album. It definitely has the feel and passion thrown full force behind it. "Drunk And On Drugs" celebrates thrash in a genuine way.
