Nightfell - Darkness Evermore album cover

Portland, Oregon based two piece Black and Death Metal band NIGHTFELL have released their second full length album, called "Darkness Evermore". It's the follow up of their 2014 effort "The Living Ever Mourn". They certainly don't sit around doing nothing.

Ominous sounding guitars and violins kick off the album in the ten minute long opening track called "At Last". After a minute or so the guitars get heavier and the voice comes in and the Black Metal and death drip off the lyrics and sound. It's first of all the slow kind of Black Metal, although they change pace as well. Not that it becomes really fast, it's more like different gears of slowness. So far the guitar riffs and the drums keep the listening experience interesting enough though.

It stays like that in "Ritual" and "Cleansing". "Ritual" is more of an intermezzo song, more macabre sounds than music. It functions as an intro for "Cleansing", in which it flows over seamlessly. Here they play with some speed for the first time, a decision that really becomes them. They pause for a bit near the middle, only to blow things up again immediately after. It's certainly not like your average Black Metal band, which tend to become a little boring after a while. NIGHTFELL manages to keeps things fresh.

"Rebirth" takes them back to the way they started, with a dark atmosphere circling around the laidback but heavy guitars. All that is silence before the storm though, after a while it explodes into another speedy and energetic song which seems to come right from hell itself. Again they keep things fresh and flowing by cutting an acoustic intermezzo into it, before going back to their normal, heavy selves.

"Eulogy" is very similar to ritual, in the sense that it serves as kind of an intro for the next, and in this case the last, song called "Collapse". The blackness spatters right of the music in this one, but the increase of speed near the middle of the song is more than welcome. With that they serve you everlasting darkness and death one more time before they finish. A great ending note for a well crafted and more than decent Black Metal album.
