Revelation of Chaos

German Death Metal quartet DEATHRITE are back with their third full-length album "Revelation of Chaos". Formed back in 2010 they've been consistently spitting out albums (a release every year bar 2014) so they've definitely been busy.
When I first gave this album a listen, I thought I was accidentally listening to DISMEMBER; the likeness is uncanny. DEATHRITE use that classic raw Boss HM-2 sound (all the Old School Death Metalheads will know what I'm on about) that hasn't been successfully used in aeons. But they somehow manage to put their own modern swing on it and make it work in their favour. Almost like summoning the spirits of their dead Death Metal brethren for assistance.
I want to take a quick moment to talk about the album artwork; it's incredibly simple. It features a skeleton with wings in a graveyard. How much more simplistic can you get? It seems like someone with a little artistic ability just gave them a sketch and said "here lads, use this as your next album cover". Now don't get me wrong, album artwork doesn't need to be grand and eye-catching (Just look at "The Black Album"!) But it would be nice if they'd put a tad bit more effort in.
Three songs into the album we have the track "Determinate to Rot" which starts off very DISMEMBER-esque (I'm going to be using the comparison between them and DISMEMBER a lot, it's uncanny!) with some screams, feedback noise and some slow paced chord work. Then before we know it we're engulfed in some flames of awesomeness when the beat picks up and the vocals properly kick in and we are treated to a catchy as hell riff. At just over five minutes long, it's the second longest song on the album and coincidentally, one of the best.
The stand out song on the album has to be the second last track "Predator". I didn't feel like I was listening to another band during this track and I felt like we get more of a sense of DEATHRITE's originality in this. It's catchy, in your face, and everything a good Death Metal song should be. I just wish they'd incorporated this style into the rest of their album, while bringing to life the greats in an album is not necessarily a bad thing, you don't want to sound like a carbon copy, which is what DEATHRITE are hovering on the edge of doing in this album.
While this album is great, I can't really fault the songs in any way, I do have one thing that annoyed me greatly; the use of feedback in almost every track in some form or another. Feedback is not an instrument, don't use it as one. It's an annoying, awful sound and, contrary to what seems like popular belief, does not make your song sound better. While the songs on this album are quite good, it fails to click with me the majority of the time. I couldn't stop comparing them to DISMEMBER which, while a good thing, as also a terrible thing since it pointed out a lot of their flaws along the way. This album is mediocre at best.
