Doctor Doom - This Seed We Have Sown album cover

Fuzzy guitar tones full of feedback and bluesy feel, DOCTOR DOOM's self-branded form of "Retrogressive Rock" is full of references to classic and modern rock acts of the same vein.

"This Seed We Have Sown" is the first full-length release from these French rockers, and definitely wears its influences on its sleeve. After opening with a spooky spoken word intro taken from a film, reminiscent of more doom-laden groups, the blues riff of "The Sun" kicks in and shows how these guys actually boogie.

DOCTOR DOOM's sound is heavily influenced by the late 60s Psychedelic groups- ranging from THE DOORS-esque atmospheric keyboard riffs, to a more demonic CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN kind of feel.

The songs are broken up with extended instrumental jams, allowing the musicians to build a rock solid groove, rather than focusing on a soloist musical approach.

The tracks all have fairly standard flavour, heavily rooted in classic bluesy Rock which is no bad thing really. The riffs are all catchy and heavily groovy, with opener "The Sun", and "Behind Your Shadow" being great examples of this.

The band's two guitarists' heavier, Metal background comes through in the attitude, depth and classic Heavy Metal swagger evident; however they also manage to create dusty, atmospheric soundscapes, full of fuzz-tones. The album's longest track, with the greatest dynamic and emotional range, "At War With Myself" really shows all the different areas where the band shines and comes into their own: heavier, faster riffs and instrumental passages are contrasted with slower, melancholic sections.

"This Seed We Have Sown" is definitely completely steeped in classic influences, keeping true to the analogue sounds of the 60s and 70s, but retaining a youthful energy which is needed to keep the current trend of Classic Rock bands on the rise. DOCTOR DOOM are yet to make a classic, but this is only their first full length release, so keep an eye out for great things!
