SaturninE - Mors Vocat album cover

SaturninE are a four-piece, all-woman Doom Metal band from Italy. They started in 2010, and with many lineup changes, put forward an album with Razorback Recordings and Italy label Terror From Hell Records. "Mors Vocat" was released April 1, 2015.

The album starts off with the title track, "Mors Vocat" which has a melancholic riff and heightened guitar sound to give the album great life as it begins. It is an instrumental track, which leads into "Moloch", which has a very strong Celtic Frost, Obituary/Bolt Thrower and Death vibe. The vocals are quite like that of many black metal bands that I am accustomed to listening to, but as the album progresses it seems the less and less I can hear them. "Fangs in the Flesh", "Crimson Sand", and "Empire of Guilt" all pretty much have the same sound and style, keeping with the Celtic Frost/Obituary feel and composition but lacking in much that would make them different aside from vocals and drumming pattern.

"Bones and Regrets" is the best song on the album as it also starts the same way the last five had, but with much clearer vocals and much more prominent guitar playing prowess as it's the short back and forth solos and pounding rhythm that keep you interested to the last second. "Escape From Reality" then shifts back to the drowned out vocals and similarity to four of the previous five songs to bring you back where you started rather than taking you away.

All in all, the album wasn't a complete bust as it held to a sound solidly throughout and had its high points.  "Mors Vocat" was great old-school type approach;  raw, crunchy guitars with lowered vocals gives a great sense of original black metal sound. Lacking in real attention-draw, and some segments of the music seem drawn out. Has a lot of late 80s/early 90s feel, especially from production but as stated before, lacks in what keeps me listening but stays "true" to the doom metal styling.
