Era Dementiae
Antropofago
ANTROPOFAGO is a Brutal Death Metal band based out of France. Formed in 2007, the band has released a Demo, an EP and a full-length album. This is the band's second full-length release and contains ten tracks.
The brief "Intro" is like a church scene gone bad; a twisted exchange between a little girl and the devil himself. Leading into "Encounter with the Doppelganger," the band wastes no time coming at you like a runaway train engulfed in flames. The pace is hastened and blast beat drumming abounds. Vocally it is deep and dark growls, but not overly low and not impossible to comprehend at times either. "Helter Skelter" is a fitting title for this song, as a maddened energy fuels the driving sound, and the structure of the track is all over the place. "Era Dementiae" has a soft acoustic opening that shows some songwriting prowess in the area of suspense and drama, and reminds the listener that sometimes a little can really say a lot. When the rest of the instrumentation kicks in, it remains yearning in nature, questioning the powers that be.
"The Other Me" is another exercise in brutality and dissonance, with a dark and low base where diverse guitar riffs and insane levers of drums battle each other along the way. "Voices" is more of an introspective tracks that holds back just enough to keep the structure recognizable amidst the fury of the overall sound. I think this mid-tempo track showcases the ability of the band to turn the switch off a bit and let the track breathe. "Insania Lupina" closes the album. It's another scorcher that is relentless in its attack. Cranked up in volume, you would not survive the assault on your senses.
I think it's obvious that the band has the musicianship down easily, and there was also just enough diversity to make the album interesting. If the listening experience doesn't leave you with your brain rattling around in your head like a drum than you might have missed the point.
