Progressive Hard Rock is WILD CHILD's style and they offer us plenty of variety with their new album "Seven". Hailing from Brazil, the band started off as a Hard Rock tribute band playing covers of various bands LIKE QUEEN, WHITESNAKE and BON JOVI, so you know they've got some pretty classic influences. They moved on to working on original music with their 2011 release "Inside My Mind", and with "Seven"., their second album, they are expanding both musically and in their audience.
"Never Let Yourself Down" is our introduction to the album, with ominous sounds building up an atmosphere before a real classic sounding riff breaks the tension. The band has a real heavy groove here, and the rhythm section locks together nicely. Great use of light and shade catches the ear, with fantastic and emotive singing from Erik Fillies who shows a really diverse range of vocal abilities from soft harmonies to really aggressive moments. The transitions between passages in the song are done really well and the song as a whole has a really progressive feel, mixing different sounds really well.
"Myself In Pieces" is a bit faster in pace to start with, and it builds up nicely into its chorus with some nice vocal technique and harmonies in the chorus, with a bit of a grungy undertone. There's some interesting stuff breaking up the song's structure, such as the small flurry of electronic drums at about the midway point. There's also some fantastic bass playing later in on the track.
"All I Want, All I Need" introduces itself with some interesting effects before slamming into a nice heavy riff. This track overall is a nice addition to the album, with plenty of the groove this band seems to do really well as well as a good blend of different dynamics. We're once again treated to some fantastic vocals on this track, and some great guitar work making this one of my highlights of the album.
"Find Your Way" has a great vibe with some tasty riffs and a flair for dynamics that WILD CHILD are clearly very good at, with lots of different feeling riffs gelling together very nicely and adding to the overall vibe of the album with a fantastic chorus. "The Circle Of Hate" is a full on heavy track, with chunky riffs and aggressive vocals throughout that meet with an interesting dynamic shift later on (I know I have said "dynamic" a lot here but it really is the best descriptor for what WILD CHILD do here!)
We reach the epic track "Church Bells" now, with its lengthy 15 minute runtime. The song builds up really nicely with some great guitar riffs and a powerful performance from the rhythm, section. The song goes into a bass driven verse which really reminds me of more mellow DREAM THEATER moments, really showing off Thiago Forbeci's bass abilities. The song doesn't linger on as some "epics" can, and it has plenty of great riffs blending with fantastic vocals to make a really nice and emotionally moving song. I don't want to spoil too much of it but it really keeps the listener interested!
"Don't Turn Off The Lights" closes things off here with a ballad! This one displays some nice lyrical flair and some lovely guitar chords too. The bass performs really well again, keeping it low key, locking in with the fantastic drumming on show, but never dumbing it down. This song is a nice closer to the album, with some great emotive musicality on display.
"Seven" is a really well done album. I hadn't heard of this band before, and they have taken me pleasantly by surprise. I really enjoy that they have really great technical moments, but that they never overdo it, always serving the song really nicely. I haven't really got any weak points to discuss with this band; they really seem to know exactly what they want to do and how to do it. The album is overall a real achievement from this band that is well worth the time of any fan of Progressive Rock.
