SEWER RATS describe themselves on their Facebook page as 'Hard Psych Grunge' and there's certainly some truth in that. But while it's easy to pick up a 'Love Buzz' era NIRVANA in their low-fi, fuzzed up raging, they're all about the Punk. Sure, there's no mohawks, two-stepping or anything that sounds like RANCID in here, but listen to them alongside old records by THE DAMNED and the similarities will become clear. It's badly produced and angry, if Kurt Cobain had taken more from BLACK FLAG than THE PIXIES he'd probably have made a record like 'Moneymaker.'

That isn't to say this is an earth shattering, genre defining release, but like BABY GODZILLA before them, SEWER RATS are good at making frenetic alt-rock with a dangerous vibe. 'Skint' is an abrasive opener, full of distorted riffs and shouty vocals that turn into a feedback heavy jam in its final third, while 'Devil Blues' is a chaotic, swaggering mess. Both sound like they were recorded for less than you spent on your lunch and recall sweaty gigs in dodgy pubs that end with spilled beer and broken glass everywhere.

Third song, 'Black Serotonin', winds things down for a laidback instrumental, before everything escalates again for 'Moneymaker.' A ramshackle four and a half minutes of screaming anger, it's the EP's best moment, although the equally unhinged, 'So Far Away' doesn't exactly let the side down either.

It's all loads of nostalgic fun, but the poor quality recording is likely to put off more people than it will appeal to. If you've been raised on albums that are crisp and clear, then the murky thrashings of SEWER RATS will just come across as cheap. Give it a year though, and this'll be a pleasing distraction for any aging punks who want a break from the news of another royal baby. If you prefer 'Bleach' to 'Nevermind' give it a spin.<
