Children Of The Drones

Based in Los Angeles, California, VENREZ are the creation of their frontman (the band being named after him); a successful movie producer in Hollywood. While many people, once they've reached their fifties, might not still have the drive and determination to start up a band with some serious intentions, Venrez did in 2011, and only four years later, the band have delivered their third full length release, "Children Of The Drones".
Opening with atmospheric and eerie sythns and effects, very much in the vein of 80s sci-fi/action film soundtracks (think The Terminator), "Hang The Predator" does a great job of setting the tone for the album. Against a backdrop of a solid, melodic rock groove, an effect laded lead line maintains the big, epic sound established in the intro, with a touch of psychedelic rock added into the mix too. The somewhat unique vocals then come in, with lyrics delivered in a somewhat restrained yet haunting style. It really works, and makes for a unique and fresh sounding band!
The title track ups the pace slightly, and deals with some social and political issues in the lyrics - it's refreshing to hear a band not afraid to confront serious issues, without having already built up a significant and committed fan base. "Salvation" is a stand out track, and almost has a kind of 80s synth pop vibe going on. Now that might sound out of place, and off-putting to some rock/metal fans, but it really does fit in with the style of the band fantastically, and is hugely enjoyable! "Mist Of Mercy" is a slower number, and well placed in the middle of the album, before the second half carries on in much the same consistent and smile-inducing fashion as the first half.
"Children Of The Drones" is, simply put, one of those albums that just works on many levels, and is good fun to listen to, regardless of your usual finer tastes and preferences. VENREZ are clearly a band that have the drive and motivation that could see them go a long way, and most importantly, they have the talent too! Oh, and their bass player is a former French National Kickboxing Champion... in case you needed anything else to peak your interest!
