"Mind Uploading" is the first EP of Quebec, Canada based all female Death Metal band SMIRKING REVENGE. The four of them have put together six songs that together form the first effort they unleash upon the world. However strange the name of their band may sound, I can see why an act of revenge can put a smirk on one's face.

"Broadcasting Liberty" kicks off the EP. It's nothing more than a vague fifty-second intro that can't even really be called a song. That makes "Cattle" the real opening track of this album. The drums and guitars the song starts with are very basic and stay that way throughout the song, although they speed up a bit towards the end. Singer Marie Claude Gosselin's voice will take you aback some, though. Even though I knew the sound would be that of Death Metal, I wouldn't have guessed to be hearing this kind of voice of a woman. As much can be said of the backing vocals as well, for that matter.

Next up is a song called "Living Organ Bank", which displays the same kind of basic drumming and guitar riffs as "Cattle" did. There's nothing special going on anywhere near here. After about three minutes, the song takes an unexpected turn though, with acoustic guitars that form the silence before the storm that comes after, albeit a small one.

"Dehumanization" then is something else. It's function is more that of an introduction than that of a song. It only lasts a minute and is entirely instrumental, with some quiet guitars. It changes the atmosphere somewhat, and for the better. All that is being undone by the song that follows it, being "Mind Uploading", which sounds as interchangeable as the rest of them. With the exception of "Dehumanization", that is.

With "Transhuman Utopian World" the band goes back to basics, back to their slow Death Metal ways, to finish of their debut effort. Which, it has to be said, isn't all that groundbreaking or even noticeable.<
