Pitbulls In The Nursery - Equanimity album cover

Oh boy, Technical Metal. A scene pioneered by some the fastest and most gifted musicians ever seen. Whilst some may dismiss bands like MESHUGGAH as percussion wankery, I just love it. This is coming from the guy with a TESSERACT tattoo so anything along these lines I lap up and demand more. When PITBULLS IN THE NURSERY landed in my email I squealed like a little emo kid at the sight of their first hair dye.

Percussive and rhythmic tones that make you want to pick up a mountain and throw it just because you can. That is exactly what "Rule the Plight" evokes within you. A monolithic sound that recreates the sound of the gods themselves in hand to hand combat. Pit inducing and beautifully chaotic it is hard to believe that this is only the band's second full-length release.

In many releases of this genre the vocals are almost a "shit we forgot to put vocals in" afterthought. Thankfully here the vocals perfectly match the mathematical instrumentation. From the low growls to the strained whispers showcased, the vocals are a joy to hear, even if they do not stray too far from the genre's clichés.

Even in their lighter moments and lead breaks PITBULLS IN THE NURSERY sound on point and pitch perfect. The chaotic moments meld seamlessly with the more sedate and create a living and breathing album. These softer musical lines would not feel out feel place on an ANIMALS AS LEADERS track, jazzy touches and glistening bass tone make these moments as appealing as the more aggressive.

The almost reggae-esque mid section on "Soul Bones" shows that this band is capable of even more, something that everyone should keep an ear out for in the future. Simply infectious, "Equanimity" is a staggering effort that puts the French band on the map for modern Technical Metal.<
