Since Metal Temple reviewed CARNALATION's last EP "Doomsday Diaries", the Finnish Grinders have thankfully been picked up by a record label which has allowed them to continue their work. Unfortunately, the latest form of said work takes the form of another EP rather than a full-length album, which is perhaps what the band needs to catapult themselves into the limelight. Regardless, a release in any form is always a good thing so the only question to ask is; "is it any good?"

Well, yes and no. The sound is undoubtedly Grindcore, utilising distorted, low-pitched guitars and generally making a hell of a lot of noise. The opening two tracks, "Drown in Silver" and "Against the Burning Sky" actually sound pretty similar in both sound and structure, appealing more to traditional Grindcore and Death Metal fans with the vocals and tempo of the music. "Passengers" stands out as being more risky in its variation of tempo, as well as the style of vocals which almost become clean at one point.

The EP closes with another high point on "Death and Rust" which surpasses its predecessor in the creative department by offering a mix of tempos and even introducing something approaching a breakdown. It's good that the release as a whole gets to end on the two best songs, but a shame that these good parts aren't present in the first couple of tracks. With the EP clocking in at just under 25 minutes, it's not like any of the songs can be justified as filler tracks, so shouldn't this be the result of all of the band's current ideas and hopes? If it is, then some would argue they should change course before they find themselves on the rocks.
