"Let's Face It" is French band OMMATIDIA's second studio album, and all the jokes I can make about its name aside, there are some very interesting things to say about the record. So, first things first: definitions. The band classifies itself as a dark metal band, and that is mostly right in that the general atmosphere of the music is dark and melancholy... not quite heavy enough to be considered purely metal to my tastes, though.
But Omni, you wickedly handsome devil, what do they sound like? Is what you're probably asking right now... to which I'd find it hard to give a short answer. The sonic qualities are similar to Gothic Metal in the darker sound, with either one guitar and the bass holding a chord as background to the other guitar and vocals or both playing rather clean passages. The vocals themselves, however, are cleaner, of the sort usually find in mainstream rock bands (pick one, most of the will fit the bill).
Okay, time to stop being squeamish about it, I do have a very short answer to the question what do they sound like: mainstream heavy music, and that sums up everything I think about the band. Every player is okay or better at his instrument, the music is melodic and pretty and the production is pretty cool, and there are even some really nice leads and vocal harmonies at some parts of the record... but mostly it passed me by. While everything was melodic and pretty, nothing stood out as either unique to them or as extremely well done. In other words, just another okay-sounding modern metal band.
If you're really into the more popular types of metal, give these guys a listen... for my money though, I write them off as decent-sounding players with good intentions, but too generic to be interesting.
