Unique, versatile vocalist David Defais is a man of many talents; orchestration, bass, keyboards and cooking. The vocals on this latest release titled "Nocturnes OF Hellfire & Damnation" from his band VIRGIN STEELE are just spellbinding and show his inimitable vocal range at their best.
For those who are new to VIRGIN STEELE here's some background information about the band; first of all they are the reason the term Metal Opera exists, could almost call them pioneers of this genre that has been taken on by quite a few modern metal bands. Being the industry for at least a couple of decades now they have created a versatile discography with remarkable titles such as "Invictus" and "The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell Parts 1 and 2" which were released as re-issues last year.
The album itself is a fine piece of work; it opens very grandly with the majestic "Lucifer's Hammer" which also gives the listener a glimpse into Defais' remarkable vocal work. He has stated he has often used electric guitars and violins as influences as well as the great singers such as Freddie Mercury, Ann Wilson and Kate Bush. After listening to this record back to back for the past few days those influences are clearly audible.
What is admirable about their latest record is that it stills keeps the VIRGIN STEELE vibe that can be heard from previous material; this shows that this sound is timeless, a sound and beautiful music that will never grow out of date or die out. The tracks "Queen Of The Dead", "Hymns To Damnation" and "The Plague And The Fire" sound as if they have been recorded in a stately theatre with great acoustics and the ability to showcase their sound.
So if you're a die-hard fan of VIRGIN STEELE wanting something new with their timeless sound or if you want a new band in your music library then you will love this exhilarating record.
