Dying Gorgeous Lies - First World Breakdown album cover

DYING GORGEOUS LIES is a Heavy/Thrash band based out of Germany. To date the band has released a Demo, their first full-length in 2011, and a recent RP. "First World Breakdown" is their second full-length release, and contains ten tracks. The opening riff to the title track smacks of old school Thrash mixed in with some Power metal, in a throwback sort of fashion. It is presented in a dark, down and dirty fashion with a tinge of NWOBHM guitar sensibilities. "Rise Again" is swift in pace and could be the anthem for the album, especially as they repeat the chorus. Unrelenting energy continues in "Wipe Out Yourselves". It's the one constant on the album and it is difficult to imagine how they can keep this up for so long. "Suppressing Fire" has one of those simple but pleasing riffs that just stick with you. The vocal harmonies usher in some depth the overall composition, and they are especially angst ridden here. I believe the brutality of sound is highest on the track "Schein." It's really an all-out assault on your senses, and you can literally feel the hate. "Riot. Call" is the first track that builds a more suspenseful opening rather than hitting you over the head with a hammer from the get-go. I appreciate the lead-in as it gives the song a chance to catch up with the immense energy of what was to follow. With a little more grandiosity, the closing track "United" is the longest on the album, clocking in at just over six minutes. The opening is slow and deliberate, like a monster mash of sorts, until the pace is hastened to a vigorous boil. Throw in some more fruit to this salad of many ingredients. It is too hard to accurately pigeonhole their overall sound, save for the overall heaviness of the arrangements. Singer Lisa Minet really drives the album with her strong vocal vision and edgy voice. The instrumentation is very tight and the arrangements are well composed with a lot of energy. I find the central theme to be anger and the promise of uprising. You won't find any experimentation here either. <
