Before I begin this review, here are my credentials (as I'm sure someone will go "he doesn't listen to sludge!" when they read this):

I've been listening to sludge, stoner and drone since I was about 16. I've played in several doom and avant-garde bands. One of my all-time favourite albums is ELECTRIC WIZARD's "Dopethrone" and yes, SLEEP's "Dopesmoker" is a close second). So you know that when I speak, I do so with good authority, and I speak thus:

Heaviness alone does not a good record make.

Frankly, that is all I have to say about this album - Sludge is supposed to be repetitive and simple, but that only makes the music so much harder to make.

Every song has about one excellent riff and all the rest feels added-on to it or repeated, which means that about ten seconds into any song your brain just shuts and treats everything after it as background.

Sound is suitable for the genre, low-tuned and heavy, as are the extremely guttural vocals and drumming. What the songs lack a soul, and listening to the end product is similar to sewing together bits corpses and expecting the monster to awake - it doesn't usually happen.
