There has been a lot of good Melodic Death Metal releases these past few years...  and FROM BIRTH TO BURIAL's "Knowledge of Old" is definitively one of them, even if the band is pretty unknown and still independent.  It's a bit on the short side, as it's only 5 tracks and under 30 minutes overall, which is disappointing... but expected since it's their debut EP.  This album shines like a diamond in the rough!  Some of the riffs and leads are worthy of being put in the same bag as the other greats of the sub-genre, so let's take a look!

"At all Cost" has some nice catchy riffs; some make me almost think a bit of old IN FLAMES material, so it's an appropriate opener for the album.  "From Which We Came" is the longest and most progressive song, starting more anxious than the previous one, then changing into something more melodic with a nice main riff!  I like the really long solo repeating itself at the end of the song!  The self-titled "Knowledge of Old" is the shortest track; it includes a weird interlude in the middle but it kind of fit the slow, melodic mood overall.  Another shorter song, "Seers" is more frantic and fast-paced than the rest, it's structure is also simpler but the chorus is really catchy. "Suppression" is lacking however; not necessarily bad or anything, it just hasn't catched my attention and is unfortunately the least original of the bunch I think.

While very short and with a somewhat lackluster finale, it still holds up very well.  I'd say that this band has a lot of potential to become popular someday!  The musicianship is excellent and all the songs feel different and varied.  It's just a shame that this EP album don't have more material!  Watch out for FROM BIRTH TO BURIAL in the future...!
