Eternal Sex And War - Negative Monoliths album cover

I love extreme music as much as the next sadomasochist but there are certain lines that have to be drawn.  Mainly, the music should really have some kind of merit about it.  You need to make sure your demonic warblings can stand up to any decent scrutiny, it might be fun smashing bloody murder out of multiple instruments but if it's just aimless noise then you might as well just start making Gabba.  This is essentially where most extreme to the max bands fuck up, they forget to include any real substance or talent to their wall of aural abuse and it all just sounds somewhat like an amp that's being thrown around repeatedly with a guitar plugged in.  It certainly is a fine art and there are few bands that manage to make seriously demented music with even a minute amount of flair.

ETERNAL SEX AND WAR are unfortunately not one of these bands.

The band formed around a hatred of the modern Metal scene, something which I can understand to a degree and although their mission statement is a just one, their execution lacks any real talent.  Surprisingly enough, they have been around for almost 14 years.  You'd think that this would have been enough time to get good at something but it would seem not.  The music is based on many aspects of Death & Black Metal with fast blast beats driving through the main bulk of the songs and a guitar that is almost begging for it's life within the first few minutes of the new album.   On these points, they do well and the guitar, bass and drums are all fairly good in their own right.  There are some fantastic guitar riffs on the album and the drums are tight enough that points that I even thought they were using a drum machine for the recording.  It all falls down with the vocals.  With a pseudonym like Thorshammer you might expect some kind of seriously testosterone laden gutturals or maybe some epic Battle Metal wailing.  If like me this is what you expected then like me you shall be disappointed.  The vocals are creaky, out of time and out of tune and above all else just sound too amateur to fit the music.  It is a shame really as with a decent vocalist this band could really step up their game and become a semi-respectable act but as it stands they sound very much like a local band that are just starting out.

I hate to be so blunt about something like this but I feel the need to be honest, this is Extreme Metal after all and if you're going be extreme, you may as well do it properly.
