COWARD, French team of guys who came to make some noise, and they had succeeded.
I barely could hear this new album Shooting Blanks & Pills, as the band description about this album, "unhealthy" is a very good definition to this tunes. There is a problem, from my point of view, to mix many, different elements of different genres in one plate, smash them and squish in one mash and eat it without baking.
This is how this masterpiece sounds like. It's raw, full with unnecessary noises and guitar feedbacks, the unpleasant to the ear vocal performance is unbearable, all this can be summarized as unprofessional. Even though they want to express the artist heart, and show the world what suffering is. Well, I cannot finish a song without getting angry, and believe me, Metal is that kind of music that not gives me the grudge.
The general definition as said in Facebook is; "Hardcore, Sludge, Black Metal" in a precise album definition, we have also Doom. I think we have enough to make a horrible music, well this could get better, if the "Hardcore part could be really Hardcore, as I mean, high energetic, punchy kick-ass music, such as PANTERA, LAMB OF GOD, MACHINEHEAD, if you go to the dirty bad-ass old school. Sludge is, as the word itself suggests, dirty and slow, but still goes good with all kind of other genres.
And here is my favorite, for so many years as I was a huge Black Metal fan, I cannot pass it quietly, Black Metal is dark, blood freezing, horrifying Satanic music. I can hear it dirty as it can be: MAYHEM, DISSECTION, DARK FUNERAL, the first materials of DIMMU BORGIR. And you can combine all of those and be an awesome band, just make it bearable, not horrible. As I said before, this is a masterpiece, it could be, if the band would put a better effort in the sound and production.
The first track of the "Shooting Blanks & Pills", starts with quiet and calm sound, as I expected for something interesting of this intro, nothing happened but the noisy drums and guitar interrupts with the vocal screams. This track has its good moments, though without the irritating vocal performance. The second track is actually very tempting and groovy, but still the general sound is insufferable. The third is slow and quiet, Doom/ sludge at its best everything's just perfect till it comes to the heavy part, it's actually kind of accomplished track, without the tunes being off-key. I'll skip the 4th track as I have nothing to say about it, because enough said. The high potential of the 5th, the "Arrogant, Unseen" is enormous, fast and heavy, hardcore, a mosh pit song, but as a potential only, with a better sound maybe. The last, 6th "Grand Failure", I'm not here to mock someone, but the band named it like this, and I think it summarize my general point of view about this album. Just to clarify my general opinion, I have to say that I have a strong feeling that the creators of this album tried to be overly creative, and they'd just ruined it.
It could be perfect awesome album, to hear it over and over again, but I couldn't do it, even for the review only. I give it 4/10, because there is people who might like it raw, dirty, off-key and with tremendous amount of feedbacks.
