Brutal Death Metal is a very hard to do well. Not just because of the musical talent required to play it, but because it has to have great production in order to stand out. You could be the greatest musicians in the world, but if your album does not get a great production, it will go largely overlooked. CARNALITY has the luck of not only being incredible musicians, but also having a great production on this newest release, "Dystopia". This is a great album, and the whole thirty-nine minutes are a lesson in finesse and musical proficiency.
Opener "Abyssus Abyssum Invocat" has an aura about it, which is often hard to create with this kind of music. The music is indicative of both BEHEMOTH and NILE jamming on a battlefield. "Doomsday" is likewise a fast and aggressive tune, which pummels you into submission. The third song on this album, "Fall of the Human Ratio" has a definite groove riding over the top of crushing onslaught of what would have normally been a fairly standard Brutal Death Metal song. The wall of noise which follows it, "The Right of Oblivion", is a stark contrast to it, essentially being one massive rhythmic chug almost all the way through. Perhaps one of the best songs on this album is "A Sysyphus Drama" which has everything you need in a Brutal Death Metal anthem; powerful drumming, a rapid dirge of guitars, and a groove. This track has a lot of progressive elements in it as well, in particular when it comes to the timing, which makes this one of the stand out tracks on this record. But by far the best thing about this album is the triptych of "Silent Enim Leges Inter Arma"; the first of the three tracks opens with some really cool guitar work, which descends into some really brutal music. It's short and sweet, and slides seamlessly into the second part of this trilogy, which is more or less your standard Brutal Death Metal tune. The final part of this epic is perhaps the best one; like the first song, it has a presence about it which just forces you to stop what you're doing and listen to it. It's a really good way to close a really great album, slowly dying away into a nice acoustic section; a calm moment for recollection after the malicious maelstrom the listener has just been exposed to.
This band is really good, as is this album. At times, this isn't the most unique album, but what is on offer here is so good that the more standard parts of it are rendered obsolete. They're going from strength to strength, and this album will hopefully get noticed. If you like Brutal Death Metal, then this is worth giving a listen.<
