Normally, I'm not one for live albums as I prefer the experience of actually being there and then, when the band performs. Also, for me to get into a band, I tend to listen to studio recordings but damn, was I impressed by this live album. What is this live album you ask? Well that'd be "Live at the Whiskey" by Glam Rockers, STRYPER.
Now, I'm going to have to quote King of the Hill and say "You're not making Christianity any better; you're making Rock n Roll worse". As you may have guested, STRYPER is a Christian Rock band. What I'm trying to say is, this band are pretty awesome, they make that King of the Hill quote somewhat irrelevant and aren't cringey like you'd expect some Christian bands to be since all they sing about is Jesus, but these guys do a good job of covering that up, much like bands like GAMMA RAY.
The album was recorded live at a sold out show in November 2013 at the legendary Whiskey a Go Go in West Hollywood, California and was produced by STRYPER's very own, Michael Sweet. The set list pans across the band's 30 years of rocking, rolling and praying and really captures the band's rawness, which is exactly what the band was going for. It's also great to see the original line up still going strong, especially after 30 years and with less than 3 line-up changes in that time.
The tracks and performances themselves seem very solid and tight, with very little screw ups and some great audience participation. One thing I did notice, is they don't tend to stop to have a small 1 or 2 minute chat with the audience, they just go straight from song to song, with almost no break, which is pretty awesome, if you ask me.
On the whole, it's a great live album, very enjoyable with some solid performances and a great set list with a strong line up to really show off who and what STRYPER is.<
