Sticky Boys - Make Art album cover

Beer swilling, amp blasting, guitar shredding Party Rock is truly a beautiful thing.  The good old  days of Heavy Metal have been slowly fading into  memory,  I've heard several rumours recently that the species "Hairiness Metallises" are on the verge on becoming extinct and are now featuring in a new David Attenborough documentary on critically endangered counter-cultures and sub-species within modern civilization.  Fortunately, there are bands out there that are determined to stop these historic archetypes from falling into the cracks of obscurity, only to be remembered in ancient  album sleeves and handed down tales of drugs, debauchery and madness so exquisite it quickly became myth.  One of these bands is none other than STICKY BOYS, a three-piece of hair and fun hailing from the Hard Rock haven of...France?

So perhaps France isn't the first place people think of when you say Hard Rock but these Monseigneurs of Metal are here to change all  that.  They hail from Paris and have been turning heads since the release of their debut album "This Is Rock 'N' Roll".  They have been compared to Rock legends AC/DC and that resemblance is quite clear through the first album.  The new album "Make Art" still keeps true to their  roots and you can hear the tearing guitar riffs that are reminiscent of the old classics and guitar solos that could melt the face from an angry Panda.  There is a slightly more modern edge to this release however, it's rather difficult to pin-point exactly what this difference is.  It sounds almost a little Skate-Punkesque, kind of like it has been glazed with some of the Californian residue left over from the drug induced period of 80's  Metal and roasted in an oven for several years on gas mark Glam.

The album opens with "Mary Christmas", a song that sounds as though it could have been written by THE MISFITS and performed by THE OFFSPRING with a bizarrely melodic minor key and harmonised chorus vocals.  This oddly set pace changes throughout however and in stark contrast to the more modern sounding songs like this, there are equally traditional Hard Rock anthems to get your head banging.  "Mrs Psycho" is one such piece, it has all the driving riff-age of AC/DC but sadly the vocals offered up lack in the raw testosterone that this kind of Rock demands.

My personal favourite from the album is "The Game Is Over".  It not only wields the speed and gait of the 80's but also touts some of the more face-melting moments from the album.  The guitar solo could quite easily feature on the soundtrack for a terrible action film starring Kurt Russell and a whole army of hookers armed with sub-machine guns.

So maybe if you are a purist looking for something to make you feel like you are up there with the old legends waving your hair around and spitting in the faces of mindless groupies then this will just about tickle your taste buds.  Chances are, you might find it a little too modern for your narrow tastes but if you just want to party and get beer sprayed all over you as you bang a small aneurysm into your brain then this is just the album for you.

Viva La France!
