It's not uncommon for the world of sports to be associated with the world of music as the latter has been used during various sporting events to serve as filler music or themes for certain sports teams of sports stars. So what do you get when a footballer sponsors a friend for a music recording? The answer is DEED IN KARMA who are a Danish Rock band from Denmark and they are the focus of this review.
DEED IN KARMA is the creation of Jonas Holmberg who thanks to his footballer friend Thomas Gravesen was able to put together a band and make Rock music. The result of this support is a new Rock band who this year released their debut album "Good Dog" on Target Records.
So what do we get here music wise from a band that originally started out being organized by someone who had a friend from the sports world? Well we get a 4 piece quintet who are from Vejle in Denmark, we get an album that is produced by Jacob Hansen who has worked with the likes of VOLBEAT and PRETTY MAIDS and we get a total of 11 tracks totalling 42 minutes of playtime.
You know, when I saw the album title upon receiving this promo for review, I did find the name of it to be a bit weird and I assumed the music would be the same but the question is, was I proved wrong? I hate to admit it but yes I was proved wrong. The album title may be a bit weird but the music itself is not weird one bit not by any means.
What the music is instead is good gritty Rock music from a European band that already scores points for me, as I love European bands as they produce some great bands. The recipe couldn't be simpler: heavy guitars, pounding drumbeats, groovy bass lines and a voice that adds a bit of passion to the music. That's all a good Rock or Metal album really needs and thankfully European bands are great at doing just that.
DEED IN KARMA are a band that use that simple recipe and you can hear that in the music. The moment the first track "I Ain't Crawling" kicks in, you get a taste of what Denmark can produce and contribute to the European Rock scene as it gets off to a very good start. Even when things slow down a bit for the albums slower paced songs "No Answer", "Waiting for the Sun" and the closing track "Release" the music stays fresh and it never gets boring even with a simple straightforward recipe.
There's even one song where the music does most of the talking and that is the song "Karma Theme" which has a couple of vocal ad-libs here and there but it's mostly an instrumental and it is a good one. Adding in an instrumental alongside the vocal tracks is a good thing to do sometimes when making an album as it adds a bit of spice to the music. I like a lot of bands that do that on a lot of their albums and it's things like that which make me enjoy the music but the instrumentals have to be good without sounding too repetitive otherwise it's a lost cause.
So, what do we get from a Danish contribution to the European Rock scene? We get something that you can play from start to finish and not skip a single track as the band are clearly passionate about music and the fact they have musicians in the band who have worked with other acts such as MACERATION and SAVAGE AFFAIR shows they have members in the band who have had experience rocking out with others.
A debut album needs to be good, as you want to show the world that you want to make good music and get some positive feedback as well as helping the listeners to discover some great music. A lot of bands are great at that as their debut's impress and "Good Dog" by DEED IN KARMA is one of those impressive debuts. The album title may sound a bit odd but the music itself is great.
