So you are tired of hearing typical, drab, poorly executed Symphonic Black Metal...enter DIABLERY. This five piece hailing from Athens Greece is the answer to all of your woes. With their follow up to the 2010 EP "The Catharsis" these Greeks have raised the bar for Atmospheric Black Metal. From the first listen you can truly hear the passion that went in to making this album. From the great production values due in part to Top Room Studios in Norway with engineer Borge Finstad (MAYHEM, BORKNAGAR, TRISTANIA, EXTOL), at the helm. To the complexity of the arrangements with majestically interwoven orchestral movements throughout, this album is masterfully crafted with equal parts brutality and beauty.
The album is set up wonderfully with the dark, yet atmospheric opening track entitled "Mysteria Aeterna." This beautifully crafted intro lulls you in before crushing you with the next track "Architect Of Manifestations." Midway through the album tracks such as "Vanity Of Darkness, and Thus Made Perfect" offer a short reprieve from the pummelling onslaught of blast beats, and demonic growls, and as a change of pace offer up some clean vocals and more orchestral nuances. The seamless marriage between the symphonic motifs and the more visceral accompaniment make for a stellar combination. "Ichore Shrine Synagogue" is easily the standout track from this opus, offering up some of the most intense drumming heard on a black metal album in recent times. This coupled with the impressive clean vocal crooning helps to catapult this track into black metal greatness. The mood and atmosphere that this song conveys is simply astounding. Unfortunately this ten song record closes out with a final track being a bit of a let down, and feeling like filler. "Horn Of Amentet," utilizes simple whispers over a bed of ambient noise, which frankly does not do justice to bringing this epic album to a close. I couldn't help but feel it was an anticlimactic ending, and was hoping for one final orchestral piece.
With that being said DIABLERY are definitely a band to keep an eye on. Especially if Luciferian style lyrics, coupled with brutal blast beats, extreme vocals, and dark atmosphere interlaced with symphonic beauty is your thing. "Architect" is a refreshing album that excels at one thing, creating dark extreme atmosphere.
