For the fans that want nice and old-school Death Metal, SEMIC STAINS was founded. The band formed in the early years of the 21th Century, in Athens. Athens and all Greece a city and a country that, beside their eternal opera singers, released some really great Black Metals and Death Metals bands that I heard recently, I truly believe that the metal in Greece will grow more and more with the years. About fourteen years since the band was formed, the band published their new album that called "Secrecy of Thoughts".
The album opened with a very interesting classic guitar intro that become to one of the best songs in the album, "Reptile". The band not scared to combine some elements from Progressive Metal, and especially in their guitar solos. This is kind of the songs that make your head to move non-stop, something that there's not a lot of Death Metal's songs that can do it in these days. The next one is "Shudders On the Cross" that not falling away from the previous song. Also fast tempo and crazy drums that made by Dinos Polychronopoulos.
In the song "Beneath the Skin" , the band a little bit returning over herself and its fun in the first two minutes but after this its sounds too much the same. However, I still got I was very impressed by the lead singer, Alex Seretis, that doing an inspiring fast and very loud growls, He makes the song feel very alive, and I thinking that he's really great singer. And then we are coming into "Quiescence", a genius Death Metal's creation and the most dramatic & powerful song in the album that reminds the old songs of DARK TRANQUILLITY.
Absolutely the best track in the all album.
"The Martyrdom Altar" is perfect opposite from the previous track. He's faster than the tracks until now and I think that he is absolutely pleasure for live shows, I can imagine the crowd just going insane in this song and I definitely would like to be there when it will happen. "This Cage" started when he reminds me, and a lot, a song of LAMB OF GOD, but then he become more and more like the normal style of this band that I heard in the previous tracks.
"Outburst" is another example of their great sound. It's not a new thing that any Death Metal band haven't done before, and still it's something that the band performs those things like not a lot of bands done before. "Secrecy of Thoughts" opened up with a great guitar riff but getting lost a little bit in the end of the song. The song ends with a melodic guitar ending that sounds unnecessary and got nothing to do with the song at all.
The last song, "Final Release", is really the weakest in the album. I think that the band can't right now deal with long songs that can be exhausting in this case. In the bottom line, the album is dream coming true for every true fan of, fast and loud, hardcore Death Metal.
I remember the first time that I heard the growl that Chuck Schuldiner done in DEATH or the fast rhythm that the band couldn't not doing, and in the end of the first song I couldn't stop hearing more song of the band.
Semic Stains haven't done anything new that nobody has ever done before them and the albums is not that original, and still, its reminds me why did I actually started to hear Death Metal.
