Knifeworld - The Unravelling album cover

The immediate benefit of playing an uncategorized style of music, is the total freedom in the creativity process and the limitless orientation with an easy way to create the surprise again & again. With such an intrepid method of deconstruction "The Unravelling " offers a real metaphoric Prog Rock prototype...A trip thru the twisted mind in an incoherent world. Specifically, think a poetic Jazzy ZAPPA merged with a quirky, an organic yet demented 70's Acid divagation like BIG ELF or the softest introspection of Devin Townsend , with its climax reaching at a nihilistic digression triptych ("The Skulls We Buried Have Regrown Their Eyes" / "Destroy The World We Love" / "This Empty Room Once Was Alive"). A good idea will be to use it as soundtrack for the hypothetical "Devil's Reject part 9-the return" by Roger Corman.

Originally KNIFEWORLD is the unique sounding visionnary solo project for guitarist/composer Kavus Torabi (ex-THE MONSOON PROJECT / ex-GONG / ex-GUAPO / ex-CARDIACS) and "The Unravelling" is their fourth release. Today it's a real touring band and it's the first recording featuring the eight piece orchestra with the full horn section and it's obviously another step further in the avant garde of Psychedelic Rock. It's also the debut album published by the most respectable Progressive label still in action: Germany's Inside Out. Iranian born Kavus Torabi's favorite toy is indeed an unclassifiable outfit at the edge of many styles. Free of any misconception, the audacious and odd patterns are mixed with melodic motifs in a relative radio friendly tradition ("I'm Hiding Behind My Eyes"). The uncommon brass arrangments are married to the most underground darkened ambiances ("The Orphanage"). The most complex structures with a few vintage electronic loops are associated within the most righteous Pop recipe for a singular result, suprising and unpredictable but also a little hermetical and destabilizing in more than a few occasions, a maelstrom of textures, choirs and weird sound that leads to a tons of mixed feelings!

THE MONSOON PROJECT / NORTH SEA RADIO ORCHESTRA / CHROME HOOF's fans should enjoy it, but boeotians and the narrow minded people should have stopped reading this analysis a long time ago, because there is nothing to conform at, nothing in the norm or in the respect of any rules. On the flip side the adventurous spirits with a broad spectrum of acceptance will maybe enjoy this piece of intellectual music from the British Shores. I'm still hesitating!
