DEVIL LEE ROT is a solo parody project constructed by Devil Lee Rot himself in homage to VAN HALEN vocalist David Lee Roth; he has previously fronted AUTOPSY, TRISTANIA and PAGAN RITES. From the project's birth in 2001 there has been a series of demos, splits, singles and of course albums. This is album number six appropriately titled "Doom Devilution" and from this title, it doesn't take a scientific genius to figure out the genre of metal created on this album.
After hearing the opening track "Devils Reign" I really wasn't holding high hopes for what the rest of the album contained, it had a very atmospheric vibe created by Gregorian type chants but the vocals from Devil Lee Rot just left me feeling puzzled as I was trying to figure out whether it worked or not.
As the album progressed however it was very clear how the tracks cleverly intertwined with one another; tracks such as "Sadness Of The Unlight" and "Son Of Dawn" gave off a haunting and gothic vibe that reminded me of THE 69 EYES. Even with this highlight of the album, I didn't find myself enjoying the record. I understand it takes all the elements of Doom Metal, for example somber guitar riffs and dark vocals, and executes them perfectly the album just wasn't grabbing my attention this time.
For fans of Doom Metal and Devil Lee Rot; I think this would be a treat.
