Hailing from Skåne, Sweden, SCORNED DISCIPLE are a Progressive Death Metal band, at least that's how they define themselves. Usually I take such definitions with a pinch of salt, as I have very high standards as Progressive (not just Metal) music go. First and foremost, Progressive bands redefine the way things are done and break the mold. Then you have "Progressive" bands, a multitude of bands influenced by those pioneers without the balls to step out of the circle like their heroes did.

Unfortunately "The Cosmic Dance of Shiva" is a perfect example as to why I have high standards regarding Progressive. Running at a total of 10 minutes, both songs are a mix of MESHUGGAH chugging with oriental (Indian to be exact) scale riffing, angry death vocals, and odd (almost autistic) rhythmic patterns. However it feels forced instead of actual songwriting, making both songs dull and boring. The absence of hooks (almost) makes it even worse. And I say "almost" because the opening of "Irrational Loyalty" had me turn up the volume. Only to degenerate to repetitive nonsensical chugging and looping of licks.

I feel bad when I do reviews like this. SCORNED DISCIPLE can play, I have no complaint with their performing ability, On the contrary they are quite good. Either they lack in the songwriting department, or the path they've chosen doesn't suit them. Hope they prove me wrong in the future.
