Think of "Post-Metal" to many people and it will immediately conjure up images: mainly of Shoegaze and Avante-Garde bands whose music is on the very edge of the metal spectrum. This type of metal might alienate some people and even bore them. If you fall into this category then you may want to give the new TOMBS record, "Savage Gold" a listen. It incorporates various musical elements to create some very interesting songs.
First of all, it is important to identify that calling this a "Post Metal" album is just a bit inaccurate. If we want to strip the sound down to its core, it would seem that it is very much influenced by Black Metal. This is essentially a Black Metal album, with some elements of Goth and straight up Heavy Metal in places. Some songs, such as "Portraits" is reminiscent of bands such as Primordial or even, at a stretch, TAAKE. All of the songs on this album have an air of Black Metal about them. The only songs that do move away from the Black Metal sound on this record do so only slightly, like "Severed Lives" and "Deathtripper", which sounds quite a lot like TYPE O NEGATIVE or even NOVEMBERS DOOM throughout most of the track, before suddenly bursting into an unrelenting and visceral Black Metal onslaught again. The music on this album is extremely good, but the one weakness that this album has is that many of the songs sound too similar to each other, so that at first it is very hard to differentiate some of the tracks from one another. This isn't such a problem if you are really into Black Metal, but if you aren't, it might distract from how good this album is.
Overall, this is a great album, and if you are a fan of Post-Black Metal bands like DEAFHEAVEN, then by all means check it out. And even though the band identify as Post-Metal, this could very well be one of the best Black Metal records to come out this year.
