E-Force - The Curse album cover

E-FORCE was formed in Montreal, Canada in 2001, by VOIVOD vocalist / bassist, Eric Forrest. This newest album is the band's third album, and is a concept based on a powerful collection of songs describing the power and temptation of, and obsession with the female race.  The band have been labeled as "Monsters of Thrash Metal", but bring a wide variety of influences and vocal capabilities that set them apart from the peers in their genre.

If the opening track "Invitation" is any indication of the tone of what is to come, we are in for a treat. It is a wicked and diabolical blend of electronica, with a whisper of female ecstasy.  "Perverse Media" then slams in, hard and fast. Eric's vocals are high in range and raspy in delivery. The blueprint is thrash, but with a very gloomy and brooding tone. I like the way the main riff builds.  It has a sinister quality to it, and gives some freshness to the genre.

The tone of "Witch Wrk" reminds me of early MEGADETH.  There is an overload of riff changes which keep the listener on his / her toes. The swiftness of the riffs keep the concept album moving along well connected. The guitar work on the album is impeccable. In "Awakening" for example, there are many different riffing techniques, but the timing is still central.  I believe it is this kind of thing precisely that sets apart the album within the genre. I appreciate the story telling interlude in "Psyclone" as well.

"Devoured" has a foreboding sound to it. The evil here is very well crafted.  Eric uses a variety of vocal deliveries to carry the track forth, and the riffing is consistently changing, morphing the sound from one melody line to another with seamless transitions. I like the bass work, low tones and guitar leads in "Your Beloved Hate" as well. Wrapping up the album is the appropriately entitled closing track, "The Curse of the Cunt". I can't help thinking of this as more than just glue to the concept. It starts as a slow, grinding, purposefully downtrodden track, with the feeling of despair, before picking up into a head-banging rhythm.

Overall I am impressed with the album, and their brand of Thrash Metal. Their musicianship is excellent and their vision lived up to the concept expectations. There is enough of a dark and evil feeling to the songs to pull you in, and enough punch and drive to keep you interested. The music is composed well, and there are lots of complexity and intricacy in the songwriting.
