Blood Mortized - The Demon

BLOOD MORTIZED is a Death Metal band from Stockholm, Sweden. They describe themselves as "Old Style, Dirty, Rotten, Unpolished Swedish Death Metal". This is the third, full-length album, and has 12 tracks.

"Bastard" opens the album, with full fervor, and two long, deep, guttural wails. Mattias Parkkila's vocals are earthy, gravely, and preeminent, fueling the instrumental chaos and sounding as if they came from the pit of Hell itself. The main riff in "My Soul Your Flesh" is a bottom heavy, pounding rhythm that would be the perfect soundtrack to a demon summoning ritual. It is as heavy and brutal as anything I have heard in this genre.

"Master of Pain" has a simple but effective main riff that is very evil sounding. A breakdown towards the end features a spooky and well place lead guitar passage, before circling back around to the main riff.  In "Blessed are the Dead," we encounter some running guitar harmonies that provide strength to the track and draw out some more musicality.  It is still very tough and unyielding, but I like the harmonies.

The title track, "The Demon, The Angel, The Disease", opens softly, but darkly, with a singular strike of a church bell, beckoning the condemned their final resting place. If they would have just held the opening a little bit longer, the suspense would have really added something a little extra.  Still, there is a little change of pace in a recorded voice-over that repeats the track title, and an ominous sounding lead guitar.

I should also like to highlight the closing track, "I Leave with Hate," which unravels slowly, from acoustic passages, to a grinding riff, and leaves you with some really deep and despondent feelings. BLOOD MORTIZED are indeed exactly how they describe themselves. This is no frills, no variance, straight-up, old school Death Metal. Most of the tracks are driven by the main riff, plenty of double bass, under in-your-face growl vocals. They are not trying to re-create the wheel, rather solidify the genre as alive and well. Their musicianship is well executed on the album as well. Purists will find plenty to their liking here, but I prefer some surprises and genre bending that just isn't present.
