The Pawn That Took The King

Scottish Metalcore band D3VILMAYCRY certainly give current Metal acts a run for their money. Formed in 2012, the four piece are inspired by groups such as AVENGED SEVENFOLD, METALLICA and GUNS 'N ROSES, influences which are apparent in the music, but the Scottish newcomers clearly have their own sound. Their latest album "The Pawn That Took The King" is heavy yet melodic, and a rollercoaster of sound. Give these guys a listen - they might just be your new favourite band.
Right from the first track I could see the influence of AVENGED SEVENFOLD in the music - from Ryan Patterson's vocals to his and Alan Graham's guitar work. "No Rest For The Wicked" is speedy, energetic and a great song to begin the album. The next track keeps the energy flowing, appropriately named "Dark Lullaby". It consists of double kick by Scott Donaghy and melodic riffs, as well as awesome cleans and growls by Patterson, giving the song a heavy yet reminiscent edge. Track 3 "Vindicta" has a subtle intro of melodic guitar, before erupting into distorted picking. Again there's melody mixed into the metal, making this track an interesting and engaging listen. "Seventh Heaven" kicks off with some cool effects, and catchy riffs and plenty of doublekick. The instruments work together perfectly, the melodies backed up nicely by Donaghy's drums and Kevin Choi's bass. The next track "Not For Me" combined rapid instruments with emotive vocals. I don't know about you, but this track is definitely one for me.
It's always nice when a heavy band does a softer song, and even better when they do it well. "Nothing Left To Say" is soulful and powerful, and a great addition to the album. "I'll Be Home Tonight" is also on the gentler side, with impressive vocal work by Patterson and some funky bass work by Choi to make this track stand out. Track number 8 "Curtain Call" brings back the SEVENFOLD vibe, with screaming riffs combined with killer melodies, and solid drumming to keep things heavy. The second last track is another mellow one, yet maintains a hardcore edge. "World In Flames" mixes memorable riffs with melodic solos, complete with deadly drums and bass. The final song is also the album's title track. "The Pawn That Took The King" has a solemn introduction, but soon does what D3VILMAYCRY does best, and brings forth the fury. The riffs are catchy, the vocals committed and the drums are at the speed of light - this track certainly leaves the listener with a great impression.
