Low Class Trendsetter
Gaggle Of Cocks
Like creeping in the slums of the NYC, tasting the bitter street life, under the bridge, trenched by everyday hardships, pretty much suffocating from the meaning of life. Talk about a harsher reality, this is probably one of the honesties that should be delivered to the masses, proving that being down under, deep fried in a lower class dimensional ditch, awkward and secluded in comparison to the normal people. Not sounding cheap, but no doubt of blue collar made, I had an entanglement with the Stoner Metal livid stogies of the American spirit, GAGGLE OF COCKS, crossing as independent, playing it groovy, sinking deep into the ground, crashing with 70's driven grooves of vintage Metal. After a decade of getting into the groove, this trio produced its debut album, "Low Class Trendsetter", attributing their city musical stuff, boozed, drugged, mellow and nicely ordained spirituality, crossing references with 70's BLACK SABBATH, dicey ALICE IN CHAINS, squat of THE MELVINS and the NYC chug Doom merits of PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH.
Generally, this is a simple musical release of hard edged Hard Rock turning the other chick, slowly whirling into a chunky street Metal brawl. Nothing that is tough to handle, just lying back in your chair. The overall course of the tunes shows a pretty tight team of guys that wrote above the decent tunes, laying the grounds for hard biting punches, demonstrating an honest play, direct and penetrating riffs, a times reoccurring relying on the songs being riff based, like old SABBATH tunes. However, several of those riffs are quite addictive, hard to deny them from nailing themselves into your veracity. Feeling the fixation by the slow to mid tempo knocking and banging of fine drumming, queasy but heated up SABBATH oriented guitars of much better sound shuffling between modern low ends to vintage crunch, rich bass work that is quite noticeable and a set of vocals that is between a drunken raspy tough bastard sounding like a blend of John Bush (ARMORED SAINT) and Sal Abruscato (PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH). All around I felt as if I was standing in a smoky street, strolling around and listening to this shindig, watching the essence of the street existence and lifespan, envisioning the hard types, ones that most people tend to ignore and stick under the rug.
"I Am the Warlock", at least at first, had me thinking of DOWN, yet as the main riff struck its chords upon me, I was hit by a BLACK SABBATH miasma along with crude lyricism and a general feel of ALICE IN CHAINS or ROLLINS BAND, showing me with an impressive atmospheric passage into a simplified chorus gauging the name of the tune, the warlock is here to rule. "Low Class Trendsetter" shoveling its way, appearing with an intro that reminded me of "Children Of The Grave", unveiling another 70's barrage of BLACK SABBATH slander, yet this one has that smooth Boogie feel crusading to becoming an early 70's jumpy rocker. Unlike the vast majority on the album, this number is somewhat varied with its offerings, even providing a Classic Rock soloing, a bit illiterate and raw but to the point. "Darkness" once again through the old Brits' lane, possibly a weirdo of a song, hanging tight with a great main riff, and several others to accompany the march of eeriness, and a glossy bass work, ending up with a fine Bluesy smacker, well written and remarkably sung. First time I listened to the instrumental "Sonza Bichez!" I thought to myself that here there was an opportunity to compose a hell of a song, yet it was chosen to become something else. From top to bottom it sounded like a build up for a hymn, and in my mind I still believe that it should have developed into an actual song. With that said, there you have a good Stoner Metal tune, Blues soaked, opaque and enough groovy to keep you busy.
