AEON ZEN is Progressive Metal band from Cambridge, United Kingdom, formed in 2008. The band has released albums: "A Mind's Portrait" in 2009, "The Face of the Unknown" in 2010 and "Enigma" in 2013. On 25th November they have released EP "Self Portrait". On this EP there are three songs from the debut with recorded into new versions and one completely new song.
The intro of "Psych!" is full of modern sounds turning towards the band's ample Progressive style, hailing with guitars and vocals from afar. "Portrait" is a great tune, revealing nice melodic riffs & diverse rhythm followed by beautiful singing in climate that reminded me of the enchanting voice of James LaBrie. Basically it is a roundup of power with a few soother moments, sheering melodies and fine bass work, it time it turned into an extreme perception. "Rain" opens with a piano verse enhanced by wonderful singing only to plunge into heavier riffs and caustic vocals, keyboards shed light similar to DREAM THEATER. "Demise" extending towards the eight minutes line, laying heavy riffs and a feisty rhythm section, a few implementations of old BLACK SABBATH incursions with Andi Kravljaca showing off why he is so talented.
Summing up, the English AEON ZEN astounded with their challenging music, mixing technical and energetic Metal guitar work along with progressive elements sharing a melodic vocal line with a few sprites of Deathly growls. This is EP is mark to notice from a band that has been out there proving themselves as creative.
