O' Finland; I hear many a band from what is usually known as a Melodic Death Metal powerhouse take an exceptionally gloomy approach to doom metal; the names THERGOTHON and SHAPE OF DESPAIR come to mind. DOMOVOYD takes a big leap away from traditional Finnish doom, and fuse a dirty sludge doom with psychedelic effects and ambience in their latest release, "Oh Sensibility" which, as it happens, features very little 'doom' at all, and focusses more on ELECTRIC WIZARDian Stoner Rock. The album contains 6 tracks, which can hardly be construed as separate, distinct tracks, and are more so designed to be listened to as a single, 52-minute long track; "Effluvial Condenser" and "Argenteum Astrum", at over 13 and 16 minutes long respectively, highlight such attempted creative wisdom.

The 'introduction' is more so almost 3 minutes of indescribable noise, that slowly transitions into the muddy, yet deceptively groovy, "Incarnation", which consists of 5 minutes of droning guitar grooves, strained, overdriven and whining leads and unintelligible ambient vocals. The far longer, and much more complicated "By Taking Breath" takes a little more traditional approach and is much more down to earth. The riffage from "Incarnation" is rife within this track, but is separated by spaced-out passages, overlayed with some (this time!) equally hazy vocals. As far as I can tell, the song does seem to evolve, and I am even noticing some possible TOOL influences in the second half of the song; one of the more enjoyable 'tracks' on the album. "Lamia" is not too dissimilar to the first track, and yet, if such a thing is possible, is even more slowed down, with a far more significant touch of melancholy and despair; the indecipherable vocals make a come-back, and are, this time, screamed, and then the song is yanked down to a sudden stop, and I am left somewhat confused. The complexity of this album's creativity really begins to emerge by the time of listening to "Effluvial Condenser". Perhaps I am uneducated and unembroiled in the ways of stoner doom, but by now I am finding the music nearly impossible to analyze objectively, as I am constantly being hit in the eardrums by tumbling walls of sound that, to me, don't make sense. If one is hoping to find any solace in the final track, the whopping 16-minute "Argenteum Astrum", one may be disappointed. While individual riffs and passages may be soothing and enjoyable, for such a long track, it may start to become meaningless, and indistinguishable from the rest of the album.

DOMOVOYD intends to carry one through space and time on their cruiser, THC-fuelled space-rocket; while die-hard stoner fans will love this album, I no-doubt fell off the journey along the way. I can, however, see much potential for creative growth within the gloomy, Finnish doom underground.
