The title MOSS carries with it a grungy earthy following. One could easily imagine something along the lines of Sludge or Doom would carry this genre far, something that glides upon the deep ends with crushing grit - comparable to the likes of GRIME and HELL. This MOSS does that, at least in part. However, exceeds expectations by adding some appreciated progressive and melodic touches - though, not without some minor flaws.

HORRIBLE NIGHT carries with it a light droning, feedback, touch. Not quite hitting the low it really needs but the job gets done. What really sets it apart from the typical (if you can really call any Sludge / Doom band typical) is that front man Olly Pearson balances some clean and harsh vocals. Of course, the harsh vocals are supreme in comparison to the clean. The latter suffers only from poor utilization, desperately needing some back-up vocal work to carry these sections. Another noticeable flaw is the lack of bass; this band has not any, which most likely affects the aforementioned 'light droning' - no doubt the reason why MOSS doesn't quite reach satisfying lows.

Aside from these flaws, this UK group has held strong for some obvious reasons. This album really isn't going to bore you - almost every song has enjoyable high points (The best being the title track "Horrible Nights"). Every clean section is balanced with harsh, satisfying, vocals - as well as vice versa. If you have the chance, pick up "Horrible Night" or any of MOSS's wealthy collection of splits or vinyl records.
