Thaw
Drudkh

From Bandcamp, "Formed in Ukraine, DRUDKH have long shaped a body of work defined by atmosphere, patience, and inner exile. Their music consistently privileges emotional continuity over exposition, drawing strength from restraint and repetition. "Thaw" stands as a direct continuation of the album "Shadow Play," conceived during the same creative period and sharing its emotional and thematic foundation. Rather than expanding outward, the EP turns inward, presenting three compositions that function as a distilled appendix to the album's world. "Thaw" explores transition as instability, as a moment where movement begins while the surrounding landscape remains frozen. The songs unfold slowly, marked by suspended melodies, unresolved structures, and a heightened sense of stillness. Themes of memory, liminality, and fragile transformation are allowed to surface without emphasis or climax."
The album has three songs, and "Memory" is first. It has a serious and somber feeling to it, and it moves slowly, with tortured vocals. There are other instruments at work here, including guitar, strings, and keyboards, and they meld together nicely. Everything taken together as a whole, they paint a desolate picture and the memories are probably not fond…or they are, but today pales in comparison to them. "Somewhere, Sometime" is another nostalgic and emotional song, and that heightened sense of stillness comes through. Oddly, and in contrast with the music, it's deafening, meaning that you almost can't stand to live without something climactic happening. Tension builds however, and it moves you to the edge of your seat, but without that final crescendo, you just feel let down in the end. That seems to be the point of this song.
"A Moment in Eternity" is wrathful, in both the dark music and the dreadful vocals that spring from despair to anger. The strings calm some of the anger at times, but left unchecked, it's free to turn to vengeance. Double bass kicks in, and more tension mounts. In the end however, the sound fades away before you can hold it. One of the best features of the album is how the music grabs hold of you and sinks in, and beguiles you to fire up your defenses for an inevitable battle that never materializes. Although it was only three songs long, it made the lasting impression that it set out to…subtle transformation.
