There Will Come Soft Rains

VLMV

For me, the album chronicled a brief moment in time of a given person’s life. From the moment you get out of the bed in the morning, how do you feel? Do you dread work? Worry about things endlessly? Many of us do both, and the first several songs reflected those feelings and the time we spend thinking about them. It was pensive, emotional, and poignant. But there was a transformation towards the end as we realize that it isn’t a useful exercise to constantly think of bad things in our life. The light came in, and the rain faded, and you can use those things to propel yourself forward.

From Bandcamp, "There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground, and swallows circling with their shimmering sound, and frogs in the pools singing at night, and wild plum trees in tremulous white. Robins will wear their feathery fire, whistling their whims on a low fence-wire, and not one will know of the war, not one will care at last when it is done. Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree, if mankind perished utterly, and Spring herself, when she woke at dawn, would scarcely know that we were gone." The album has nine songs, and "Tribal (A Heart, Self-Taught)" is first. Soft, gentle tones greet the listener, with clean vocals that are melancholy. Like waking up from a dream, the smack of cold reality hits and makes you wonder what you were dreaming about in the first place. I love the line I heard from a movie once, "dreams are what make life tolerable."

"We are all Explorers Now" comes out of the gate with brighter tones, and pulsing keyboards provide the energy you need to get out of bed. Strings and vocals keep you from getting up too fast however, and there is still a melancholy feeling afoot. "The Pilot" drips with ambiance and atmosphere, and the space between notes is where you get the sweet treat. The vocals are very expressive, and are almost whispered, and the strings are inherently sad. "Bodies Grown, Pt. 1" has warm, comforting tones, and just a bit of doubt comes with them. Oddly, I feel a sense of renewal here buried within the sadness. "In Absentia" means "in one's absence." That sense of rebirth is extended here and taken to an even higher level. When I consider the title, it's akin to sending someone to handle your business while you exit for a vacation alone somewhere tropical. "I Am an Officer" cools things down once again, and it occupies a space in time designed to give you pause to think, and ponder…maybe some of the choices you made.

"Philistine! (Reclaim the Sky!)" is a bit of a slow starter, and it reminds me of a flower trying to bloom while old man winter still has his grip. "Bodies Grown, Pt. 2" lets a little more light into the drab room, and the increase in sonority as it moves along is akin to you getting back up after being knocked down a lot. We really have no other choice, do we? "Somnolence in Reverse" closes the album. Somnolence is a state of strong desire for sleep, so if it's reversed, it means an awakening. Shining electronic notes remind me of the sun peeking around the corner of the mountain in the morning, and when you see it, and feel its warmth, you realize all is good in the world right now. Following the emotional journey, it's a nice way to end the album on positive notes.
