Book of Lamentations
Morkdod

From Bandcamp, "The alchemy of music and spirit. Possibly the most controversial unblack metal band in the vast expanses of Russia." That's the only information I was able to find about the band…just this simply quote on their Bandcamp page. The album has eight songs, and "I" is first. A stage of destruction and death is set from the darkness of the opening tones, and it's like peering into a black hole and realizing the infinity of what you are looking into. Even getting close enough for a gaze, its massive gravitational pull already made you a victim, and harrowing doesn't begin to describe the sound. "Convulsing above the Ground" is another filthy and horrid offering, but as soon as it stains you with blackness it retreats to clean tones. Tension still looms high however, and even the reprieve doesn't give you much relief. I feel like I am in a haunted maze that there is in fact no way out of.
"And I Recall" is a cold slab of Black Metal the likes of which act like a frigid wind from the North that can freeze exposed skin within seconds. The vocals screams represent that wind, and the music represents a feeling of total isolation. "You Endured for Me" still has that tension hanging in the background like the thick fog of morning following rain. Some of the guitar tones are clean, but that doesn't take away the intensity of the fear it invokes in the listener. "Pus in Mortal Wounds" opens like the night sky on a clear evening, and suddenly you feel totally insignificant when you look at such a marvel. Clean tones lead the way, with backing ambiance, and it feels magical to me. Harsh vocals break the veil and they sound like torture from a parallel universe. Add in distorted guitar riffs, and that feeling is magnified.
"O Christ" is another song that is expansive, and that feeling of gravity comes from the backing elements they Egor develops so well. The screams are again tortured and intense, and seem to come from every direction. "When the Skies Clear" is much more odd, in the sense that the music seems unconnected with the melody line established. It's like trying to fit a round peg into a square hold…it's incongruent. "Lamentations" is the final song, and takes darkness and the void to a whole other level. The noise emitted is somewhat soft and even, but it spreads like an easily communicable disease from person to person, town to town, and country to county, until the whole world is punished.
This isn't just Black Metal from Russia. It's more on the scale of gravity that caused the nuclear reaction to melt down in Chernobyl in the late 80's. Place yourself there. It could have killed most people on the continent of Europe, and that realization must have been an impossible pill to swallow from anyone who has a conscience. There's blackness, and then there's the void. This album is the latter.
