Desert Ritual
Obey the Sun

OBEY THE SUN. That is not exactly a household name that one would use for a Grunge Metal band, as they classify themselves. They are from Hungary, and as far as I'm concerned they are a breath of fresh air. That isn't the case due to the novelty of the music they make, but more about the attitude they have adopted, the way they show us in music as well as lyrics how confident they are in what they do. and as for the musical direction they have taken, yes, you could call it Grunge Metal, but I wish to add that this is perfect for those Metalheads who love their BLACK LABEL SOCIETY and wish to hear more of that mix of Stoner, Sludge and Grunge Metal you won't go wrong with this, the current EP "Desert Ritual". Because in the 17 plus minutes that you get that is what I hear, and I mean that in the most positive way.
To me the sound is very much reminiscent of what BLS does, but so are the vocals, only without the southern draw that Zakk Wylde has in his voice, but also without the alcohol fuelled atmosphere. Tamás Orbán-Ducos sounds a lot cleaner, but to me just as impressive as the big man himself. As for the rest of OBEY THE SUN, they are very accomplished in playing as a band, as operating as a team, as the ease with which they are blurting out the songs on "Desert Ritual" makes you wonder how long these guys have been together. Well, that is six years now, so since 2020. They already released an EP in 2024, "L.I.R.A.", but I haven't heard that one (yet).
Finally I will come to the music that is on offer here. What I can say is that all the music that OBEY THE SUN has opted to add on "Desert Ritual" is way above average, is of a natural and organic beauty that is very refreshing in this day of all mechanics and robotics. Yes, that is one thing that has gotten me hooked from the start, the way that you just know that this are real people playing real instruments, like a real band should. And when they then are able to give you such good music, with such a wide variety, but still very recognisable, you know they're doing something right. Which only means that OBEY THE SUN are doing just that on "Desert Ritual".
