The Second Mechanism

When you read a review for a website called Metal Temple you might expect it to be on a band from the Metal genre. However, DIAGONAL does not fall into the Metal genre at all; instead this psychedelic band claims the 70s like progressive music label. It harkens back to the days where listening to music was something you had to sit down and take the time to do. You would have to get out a huge black disc and place a needle on it to get any music to play. Once the music was playing you'd sit back close your eyes and let the music take where ever it pleased. "The Second Mechanism" sounds so nostalgic to that 70's style of music that if you were unaware of what year it was released you might mistake it for a legitimate 70's Progressive album.
This record has only five tracks with the shortest track, "Voyage/Paralysis", clocking in at over six minutes long and the longest song, "Hulks", coming in at ten minutes plus! The psychedelic influences of PINK FLOYD, YES, and KING CRIMSON, are very audible throughout this glorious album. "The Second Mechanism" is mostly all instrumentals with a few vocal lines here and there, making this even more Proggier! The lack of vocals do not take away from this jewel of an album, in some cases it makes it even better and more enjoyable to sit back and just listen to the music. The instrumentation is a bit complex and at times hard to follow but that comes with being a progressive band. The length of the songs might be hard to swallow for some listeners but for those who take the time to enjoy the great musicianship exhibited here the reward is astounding.
This psychedelic album is unlike anything being created today which makes DIAGONAL stand above the rest of the artists at work today. "The Second Mechanism" is not for the faint of heart and I'd only recommend this record to extreme connoisseurs of progressive music.
