Korbo

From Bandcamp, "At the border between metal and progressive rock, KORBO is a band with a hybrid style, balancing saturated riffs and soaring melodies. The ambivalence of the atmosphere and the complexity of the rhythms paint a kind of music that is at times moving in its innocence, and at others a vehement outcry. The vocals, sung in French, highlight lyrics with dark, immersive, and melancholic themes that invite us into introspection." The album has five songs. "Neant" is first. It enters slowly, with some mellow guitars, but rounding the minute-and-a-half mark, a hardened riff enters. The cadence and chord progressions in the verses sound like the METALLICA song "Blackened." It takes a bit of a diversion down a long, windy road, before the earlier sound returns. The production is quite muted.
"Sans Maintenant" is a shorter, four-minute song. The vocals are fairly melancholy, as is the music, although there is some tension hanging loose. It grows more aggressive as it moves, and you also get a sense of the band's excellent musicianship. The title track is longest, just over 11 minutes. It enters like the sunrise on a warm day with clean, gentle guitar tones, and the vocal harmonies are excellent. Then, the sun ducks behind a cloud as aggressive tones approach. The rhythm section of the song would be firmer and clearer if the production was better. As it stands, it's muddy. "Chaines" enters with the firmer sound in the forefront, and it moves slowly, almost like Sludge would. Once it gets going, the strangest feature is how the music and the vocals are connected with the same key.
"Les Mots Du Silence" is the final offering, and it has a slow, melancholy beginning. A firmer guitar passage enters, and the song takes on a renewed life. They shift the meter to and fro as well, such that it's hard to identify. Even for Progressive music, this was a strange album. The best part was their musicianship and willingness to explore. However, the album lacked a cohesive direction for much of it, and the pitchy vocals were a bit hard on the ears.
