Thelema
Decipher

From Bandcamp, "DECIPHER released a sublime album in "Arcane Paths to Resurrection," which was steely and composed, enriched with melodic undertones. It was the timeless kind of black metal that was largely inspired by the classic black metal bands and yet didn't sound too dated. Two years later, the Greeks return with a new opus, elaborating on the music forged on that album, adding better nuance and structure to the songs whilst retaining the sound and appeal. Allowed better expression, the songs are comparatively longer and have a narrative quality to them without straying too far from the core sound. The riffs are drenched in emotions without being overtly melodic as the music marches ahead resolutely with its steely demeanour. This is the kind of black metal that gets its priorities straight - with the right focus on riffs, feeling, intensity, and passion."
"Return to Naught" is the first of seven cuts. It opens aggressively and with a thick and dark edge. It slows for a few bars to let absolutely harrowing elements seep, then it's off again with meaty bass notes providing much of the fuel. "The Black March" is just that, and I can visualize a collection of demons marching in Hell ready to take over the earth above. It is slow, punishing, and aggressive. It's also quite somber, and listen to the lead breaks that accentuate this feeling. "Seven Scars" is much faster and even chaotic. It feels like the band has taken over a bus and are driving it at breakneck speed, as it careens towards a cliff nearly out of control. The vocal screams are horrid. "Bound to the Wheel" is another song that has intensity dialed up to 11, and when the guitars and drums charge forward, you better get out of their way.
"Hail Death" is a song that reflects disease, war, famine, and death, like the four horses of the apocalypse. It moved with conviction, purpose, and confidence. "Towards Renaissance" is another dark and brutal offering, and a lot of its frightening elements come from the guitars and vocals. I can't say enough about how nice it is to hear bass notes in Black Metal, as they are often mixed low. They provide a real meaty low end to the music. "Litany" is the final offering, and it offers clean vocals sung in a ritualistic manner, like a prelude to torture. What the album did best, was create an aggressive and harrowing listening experience that was dark and nefarious, and the band is clearly talented. However, it lacked a bit in diversity, and there is room within the genre to explore more.
