Death And Pain
Dunkell Reiter
Don't take this the wrong way, and I am not being judgemental about it, but most of the times when I faced the wrath of a Thrash Metal band from South America, usually from Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Argentina and Venezuela, I get an evil and raw oriented bash party of speed mutating into something grouchy, utterly angry and not necessarily musical. It is not that I expect from every old school oriented Thrash Metal band to barge in on me with classic TESTAMENT, SLAYER or EXODUS form as I believe that the South American continent has been providing the Metal world with some quality examples such the Brazilian SARCOFAGO that can be considered as one of the pioneers of raw Thrash Metal amped with Speed and even blackish features. However, I do anticipate for some logic, even in an area where logic doesn't play a considerable part. I like the raw stuff but what I listened on the combo release of the Brazilian underdone and manic Speed / Thrash Metal band DUNKELL REITER and their "Death And Pain" release, via EBM Records, really turned me off big time sending me to ask myself how can a band release something such as this, even if we are talking here about a mixed demo release along with Live selections. I was left with unanswered questions and I know that probably the band would be able to reply to that.
Right from the entry point of the album, as if struck by a stray bullet, there was no rest for the ears as DUNKELL REITER bit hard with scratchy sounding riffing aimed to be simplistic as hell with plenty of bumps and bruises surrounding the prompt rhythms. On the other hand, I had something for the opening burst of "Merciless Death" that exemplified the power of mid to late 80s Speed / Thrash of the North American origin, something in the vein of DARK ANGEL (not because they have a hit song with the same name), English type MOTORHEAD and Teutonic combustion of the raw early 80s DESTRUCTION. That track did blow with several of well made riffs, even with their repetitive sense as the songs' structure wasn't that over the top, a few exchanges of soloing and manic devastation on the skins. The big no no of this one, as well as the others I might add, is the fact that the band's vocalist, Assassin, made an horrific performance. I don't really know what he meant to prove with the annoying vocal line but be sure that he didn't sound as evil as he probably wanted, at least from my end because he had his fair share of singing or screaming off key. As for "Merciless Death" on its own, and yes I am pushing it, it didn't have to be that long because it virtually ended up reprising the same verse over and over.
I could find a few headbangable rhythms and not so tight riffing within the motorcycle accidents of "Endless Fight", "Nuclear Disaster" and "Chainsaw...Return To Slaughter" that didn't score that easily with its corny lyrics. I don't mind an outro of an audible cut taken out from a horror movie where a guy gets slashed to pieces by some maniac (Probably from a classic B Movie that I didn't recognize), but this is supposed to be a song and even as raw as it is, it shouldn't be molested with childish lyricism, grow up please. As for the live performances, I would pass because even when the production was rather ok and you would be able to distinguish the tunes rather clearly, I think that lack of taste would be the grand element surrounding these songs, especially a type o like "Soldiers Of Hell". As I mentioned I like the forcefulness and the old school antagonism but how about composing it better so it would sound classy and evil in the same time. In short, fans of early Speed / Thrash and the gruesome filthy version of this fusion would love to take a crack at this one but as for me, it is less than ok and I am being merciful.
