Unmother

This was a positively creepy and frightening album that used some unconventional techniques, and had some progressive leanings. The tortured sounds were so vivid, you could feel them on your own body. Tread lightly here…I feel it’s like a Pandora’s box that once you open, you can never again close.

From Bandcamp, "UNMOTHER is a London-based Black Metal project formed in 2019. Conveying today's dystopic reality through a mix of atmospheric and experimental elements paired with traditional Black Metal. UNMOTHER take an active stand against any racist, sexist or fascist ideologies. The new album has six songs, and "My Armor" is first. The first few bars are strange…some tension and spoken words. It segues nicely to a familiar Black Metal sound that is dark, and the production is purposefully muted to give the album a reflection of the void. Some of the chord progressions are unusual however…both dissonant and creative. There are also deep harrowing moments here. "Bear Hug" features audible bass notes and progressive leanings, and it's evident that this isn't your dad's Black Metal. It's frightening, very dark, and even dangerous.

"Modern Dystopia" is slower moving, still with meaty bass notes, but the guitar rhythms create a trance like state for the listener. Harrowing is too light of a word to describe this sound…it may turn your hair white by the end. "Attiki Victoria" has tortured vocals, and they sound like the last utterances of a dying man, behest with regret. The music provides some brief rays of light, but the vocals blot them out quickly. Still, the sound hangs in a delicate balance between good and evil. The title track is a nine-minute opus…plenty of time to explore the nine planes of Hell. The vocals sound like they are coming from a burning demon hiding in the shadows. Heavy bass notes thump like the marching of army boots, and again, there are more harrowing elements than you can count. The song passes years of loneliness that just drag out, and if you aren't careful, you can fall victim to that feeling.

"Magda" is the final offering, and creepy organ notes lead off the song, sounding like they are accompanying a funeral procession. You could cut the tension here with a knife, and as it progresses, you begin to feel your soul leaving your body. This was a positively creepy and frightening album that used some unconventional techniques, and had some progressive leanings. The tortured sounds were so vivid, you could feel them on your own body. Tread lightly here…I feel it's like a Pandora's box that once you open, you can never again close.
