Bygone is the self titled LP of the heavy metal band Bygone from Boston, Massachusetts. This band was a very interesting listening experience to say the least. A combination of 80s thrash metal mixed with the complex storytelling and complex instrumentation of progressive rock. It's not necessarily my thing, but the album does have its charm. I love the voice of Jim Kirn as it rides over the instrumentation effortlessly.

This band is just straight up rock and roll with some progressive influences. Heavy, screaming riffs, frenetic drums, melodic songwriter mixed with the faintest sounds of a keyboard in the background create a unique sound, a throwback to a bygone era of metal if you will. Standout tracks on this thing include Shadow Rising which features a dynamic vocal performance as well as the haunting sounds of the keyboard combined with the guitar riffs. The deep bass tones round out this awesome song. Another standout on this album is is City Living which starts out with a very rhythmic riff, Jim's sultry, rock and roll voice penetrating the listener. It has a very danceable beat to it actually, the drumming melding perfectly together with the crisp guitars. Fire in you Fire in Me is probably my favorite song on the album. It begins with synths and keyboard, the drums and guitar layered beneath. Then the soft, melodic vocals kick on adds another layer to the track. This one really reminds me of something that could've come out in the 1980s. From the sound of Jim's voice, to how it echoes through the microphone. It reminds me of a ballad, and something that also combines elements of the blues in it as well. The guitars on this track are crystal clear, and definitely my favorite part.

Take me Home also has an interesting 80s rock sound with it. It begins with synths and keyboards that give the impression of bag pipes, with the light guitars and light drums in the background. I enjoy the band because I love the asthetic of the 80s and this album does just that. It's like old school metal, mixed with classic rock and even some elements of pop that round out this album and make it really interesting for sure.

Overall, Bygone is a very interesting album from another era. You can tell that the members of the band really care about the 80s from which a lot of this album is inspired by, and that is shown in the songwriting, the use of keyboards and synths, and the overall sound of the vocals. It has a Rush progressive rock vibe that I really enjoyed, and I would recommend this album to people who also like that vibe.
