The new record by London England thrash metal band War Grave, Freewill, is nothing short of an homage to the classic thrash metal sounds that took over the world in the 1980s. The energy is amazing here and these songs prove that. From heavy guitar driven tracks, squealing guitar solos, and crazy drumming, this band has it all. It offers a dose of nostalgia to those who grew up in that time period seeing bands like Megadeth, Death Angel, and Metallica.

The opening track, Foreshadowing, definitely does just that; it tells us what we are to expect when we partake in this alum. From the quick, staccato drumming which is layered underneath the a sick guitar riff and solo, this instrumental introduction tells you all you need to know about the album and this band. The third track on the album, Night Hunter, gives us exactly what we expect. Great riffs, sick bass tones, and great drumming accompanied by the vocalist Roman Kantoch with his nostalgia infused voice. The energy emanating from this band is next level, and it's definitely something that you can bang your head too. Fast rhythm that rarely slows down, with a guitar solo in the middle of the song full of speed and technical prowess, War Grave is a master class. Break These Chains, the forth track on the album, begins with a danceable rhythm which again is infused with 1980s nostalgia. While the band has a nostalgic sound, it doesn't rely on the nostalgia.

The songwriting is there, as is the technicality of the instrumentation. The vocals and the instruments meld perfectly together in harmony. The screaming guitars on the back end of this song are again amazing; and the bass tones layered beneath add an extra something to the song as well. As far as the meaning and depth of the song, I think it's talking about you can make your own way in life. When the vocalist says "And when people tell you which way to go/they only want you to fall" meaning that people don't want you to be better than them. Light Them Up begins with a train chugging down a track accompanied with horses galloping beside it. It definitely gives an old west vibe. Light guitars and drums open this track until it morphs into the thrash metal sound we all know and love. Upon first listening of this track, I imagined it being a ballad, as bands used to do in the 1980s.  Once the soft guitars go away, heavy, chugging riffs accompanied with brilliant drumming pierces the listeners hearing and commands your attention.

Finally we have the final track on the record, Forever with Me, which is a standout to me. The guitar riffs that kick off this track are groovy, but then the song slows down a little bit. I love the sound of the singers voice on this song, and the instrumentals are just great as well. The guitars on this track are extraordinary; some of the best guitar work I've seen done in a thrash metal band. The guitar solo in this song lasts a longer time, but in the best way possible. This album is just straight up 80s infused nostalgia in the best way possible. With great riffs, drumming, lyrics, writing, and a vocalist that sounds like the best the genre as to offer, Free Fall by War Grave is definitely a treat.
