The Apocalyptic Aeon
Avdagata

"The absolute killer second album from the new wave of the classic Gothenburg Sound. The first version of the genre was brought to us by the like of AT THE GATES, DISSECTION, and others, the new wave is here thanks to AVDAGATA the finest version of where death metal is heading in Sweden's second city in size, but number one in terms of metal." The album has nine songs, and "As Humanity Falls" is first. It has a fast, heavy, and firm sound out of the gates, together with a rich, bombastic sound. The harsh vocals are deadly, and the brief lead breaks are very popular in the genre…they help to counterbalance the aggression. "Impes! Homines! Mors!" is another song with a deep aggression in addition to drums that roll at the speed of light. The pacing varies at times and the shifts keep you on your toes.
"The Apocalyptic Aeon" has a thick and firm sound with plenty of aggression, but there are also some more atmospheric and melodic passages to go along with their anger. "Fireborn Tyrant" has a good dose of harmonized leads as well as excellent guitar work in general. The vocals are fiery and contentious as well. "Regnum in Tenebris" has a bit of a build, to an explosion of sound…rolling drums, thick guitar work, a heavy bottom end, and plenty of vocal aggression. There are some solid melodies in the chorus to help temper the sound. "Ascend into Ruin" is weighted, heavy, and aggressive once more, and at this point, the band doesn't even try to hide it. The clean vocals however are surprising, and fit in nicely with the sound. "Människan Till Kol" features some somber guitar notes along with the contentious sound.
"Luciferian" is the final song, and it has a slow, matter-of-fact quality to it, like the band is presenting the sound whether you are in line for it or not. There is some excellent guitar work here as well. This is solid Melodic Death Metal. However, a keyboard player was listed, yet I struggled to hear any keys. I would dial them up more in a future mixing session. Also, although the near absence of clean vocals keeps the band pure, they can only help with the melodic side of the music. The band makes no excuses for keeping their sound pure and steeped in the early days of the genre, but taking a few more changes wouldn't hurt them.
